Saint Hilda's Digital Walk
We have obtained planning permission to locate this sign.
Any directions as to where to go next will be in red and bold. Look out for these directions
If you step back about twenty feet from this board and then step back in time to 1920 the scene you would have seen is show in the picture below. This is Hilda Place. Note the communal water tap between the two large families.
The wall at the back of the picture separates the houses from the cemetery behind. This is now an open footpath up the stair. So how do we know that this is the location? Chris Gitsham of the reference library spotted two things in the picture: the lamp without a post and the fire hydrant sign. He found the same two objects in the 1/500 1894 Ordinance Survey sheet for the St. Hilda’s area.

Directions as to where to go next:
If you have just stumbled on this, then you could walk up those steps and follow the path to another QR on a tree. This is the location of the farm that stood there when the population of Middlesbrough was just 25. The St Hilda's Digital Walk starts at the Custom House (MyPlace) You may wish to start there.
If you are already on the walk head back up the steps, follow the path and at the Y junction veer left

If you are on "Walk Talk And Learn" go back to the main road (Durham Street) and turn left. The next QR is on a lamp post.
